Never Do This: Testing Flight From a Height
One rule that overrides every flying technique on this site: never test whether you’re dreaming by jumping from something real.
This is the one genuinely dangerous mistake in this whole practice, and it’s already covered in the safety postas the single rule that matters: never test a reality check against something that could hurt you if you’re wrong. Flying is where this rule gets broken most often.
Everything in the dream is safe. What you do with your real body isn’t.
The mistake looks reasonable in the moment — you’re lucid, or you think you might be, and jumping from somewhere high feels like a fast way to confirm it. It isn’t. If you’re wrong about being asleep, there’s no dream cushioning the landing.
Build flying the same way you’d build any other skill: start from the ground. Confirm lucidity first with an actual reality check, then lift off from level ground inside the dream, not from a real ledge, real stairs, or a real balcony in waking life. The confusion between the two states is exactly what this rule exists to prevent.
