Your First Night: A Step-by-Step Script
No theory this time — just the five things to do, in order, the next time you wake up naturally in the middle of the night.
The indirect technique explains why this works. This is the practical version — the exact sequence to run, with nothing left to figure out in the moment.
Before bed
Set one clear intention, the way it’s covered in the intent post: “Tonight, when I wake up naturally, I run this sequence.” That’s the whole prep. Nothing else needed.
The sequence, when you wake up
- Stay still. No opening your eyes, no shifting position, no reaching for your phone. Movement resets you to full waking alertness.
- Try an imagined movement. Picture yourself standing up, or moving a hand, without physically doing it. Notice if anything responds.
- Watch for visual static.Patterns, light, anything behind closed eyes. Don’t chase it — just notice.
- Listen for unusual sound.A hum, a rushing noise, anything that isn’t coming from the room.
- Run a reality check. If anything from steps 2 through 4 showed up, confirm it with a real reality check before assuming anything.
If nothing happens
Reaffirm the intention once, briefly, and let yourself drift back to sleep. You haven’t failed — most nights, most attempts don’t land. The sequence works because it’s run consistently over many attempts, not because any single try is guaranteed to work.
